How to spend Christmas in Scotland
How to spend Christmas in Scotland
Christmas in Scotland is a magical time to get out and explore our beautiful country. With Christmas markets aplenty, stimulating winter activities and (hopefully) some snowy scenery, there is a lot to keep you entertained at this time of year.
The Campion Homes team has put together some of the best festive things to see and do to celebrate Christmas in Scotland this year.
Balbirnie House
This award-winning luxury country house hotel is superbly located between Edinburgh and St Andrews. Offering sumptuous accommodation and delicious meals over the festive season, this is the perfect Christmas getaway.
Balbirnie House is renowned for its comfortable hospitality and festive atmosphere, so whether you are stopping in for lunch or staying a little longer, a visit is bound to get you in the Christmas spirit.
Edinburgh’s Christmas Market
Always a must-visit during the holidays, Edinburgh’s Christmas Market is renowned as the ultimate way to celebrate Christmas in Scotland.
With the delicious smells of mulled wine, bratwurst and all manner of tasty treats, it is a foodie’s delight. Aside from that, there are a huge variety of stalls selling local and bespoke products and gifts, so you can stock up on your Christmas shopping at the same time!
Soak up the vibrant atmosphere, or, if you want to get away from the crowds, our top tip is to head along to a new pop up bar, Cask Smugglers situated on Waverley Mall’s rooftop. It is a must-visit for creative cocktails and classic concoctions mixed up in an industrial-style space.
Stirling Winter Festival
Featuring everything from a ceilidh to a giant snowball fight, the Stirling Winter Festival has so many fun festivities on offer this year.
The gorgeous Christmas lights display provides a sparkling background to the festivities, which include a family ceilidh night, a performance from Stirling Orchestra and a locally run Christmas Market. Kids will also not be short of entertainment, with SnowPlay, an interactive children’s show featuring a snowball fight, and a Christmas in Toytown show performed by Funbox, formerly members of the famous Singing Kettle.
Perth Christmas Lantern Parade
The Perth Christmas Lantern Parade is a beautiful lantern-lit procession through the city centre and a atmospheric way to welcome in the Christmas season in Scotland. Ending with the unveiling of the Perth Christmas Nativity Scene, it is a great family-friendly event.
There will also be carol singing and bell ringing on the night to really get you into the festive spirit. The parade is part of the wider Perth Christmas Festival, which includes a Festive Market, a Christmas Design Market and a Chocolate and Gin Market.
Santa Dash
If you are looking for something a bit more fast paced in the run up to Christmas, the Santa Dash 5k run in Glasgow is for you. The sight of thousands of Santas dashing through the street is one you will not forget in a hurry– whether you take part or just come along to watch a procession of sporty Santas.
Not only does this event spread Christmas cheer, it raises money for amazing charities too -this year the dedicated recipients will be the Beatson Cancer Charity and The Lord Provost’s Children’s Fund.
Christmas at Hill of Tarvit Mansion
Located just outside of Cupar in Fife, Hill of Tarvit Mansion is hosting a variety of festive events this winter.
From their beautiful Christmas Fayre selling all manner of creative pieces from local makers to a traditional Nativity Play, there are lots of reasons to pay a visit to this gorgeous Edwardian mansion this festive season.
Performance highlights will include the Festive Christmas concert on the 7th of December and the Fife Nativity Play from the 20th – 22nd December.
Christmas Wreath Workshop, Balgove Larder
Fancy getting creative this Christmas? Balgove Larder in St Andrews are running a series of Christmas Wreath Workshops this December.
Their floral experts will guide you through making a gorgeous festive wreath, made up of seasonal sprigs, stems and greenery, all while basking in the festive, cosy atmosphere of the Balgove Larder and fuelled by treats from the kitchen.
