Fife is known by food lovers for its incredible range of fresh fish and delicious produce, from breads to cheeses, meats and more.
Crail Food Festival takes place every year in the coastal village of Crail on the East Neuk of Fife. Launched eight years ago in celebration of Fife food and drink, the festival is now a staple of the Fife calendar and draws in large crowds from across Scotland and beyond each year.
In 2019, Crail Food Festival takes place on the 8th and 9th of June. It is free to attend for all visitors – but you will want to bring plenty of cash to sample some of Fife’s finest food and drink from the festival’s many vendors.
If you are heading to Crail Food Festival, here is what to look forward to…
Produced by Fife local hero Iain R. Spink, the famous Arbroath Smokies are like nothing you have ever tasted before.
Using a traditional method which is hard to replicate, delicious haddock is first rubbed in salt to draw out moisture before being hung over a halved whisky cask and placed over a fire pit. Left to smoke for up to an hour underground, the sumptuous smokies take on an incredible flavour that is hard to describe. To understand how good these Arbroath Smokies are, you will just have to try them for yourselves!
Barnacles and Bones
Try out some delicious shellfish from the Barnacles and Bones team at Crail Food Festival. Usually based in Edinburgh’s Old Town, the team also serves some delicious cuts of meat, so even if fish is not your thing, you can still enjoy what’s on offer.
There are plenty of rave reviews about their crab and beef online, with one commenter saying, “Great to be able to have some healthy, fresh fast food.”
Wild Fire Pizza
Using an authentic wood fired oven, Wild Fire Pizza makes some incredible gourmet pizzas. Serving a range of flavours - from the traditional to the less conventional – out of their dinky but adorable food truck, this pizza is sure to please everyone in your party.
The Crema Caravan
A simple idea, but a genius one – a crème brûlée truck! When you are done with your savouries, head over to the The Crema Caravan and choose from a selection of crème brûlée flavours, with the sugar burnt to order.
Gorgeous with coffee – or something stronger in the sunshine – you will feel very sophisticated eating this delightful sweet treat.
Eden Mill, based in St Andrews, is a very popular gin distiller known for its punchy flavours. Try one of their gorgeous gin cocktails or a classic G&T.
Strathearn Cider Company
If gin is not your thing, try out a delicious cider from the incredible Strathearn Cider Company, makers of Scruffy Dog Cider, which is fermented using champagne yeast. Hailing from nearby Perthshire, this is some very special craft cider.
Fun and relaxation
In addition to the amazing food and drink on offer at Crail Food Festival, there is also a great relaxed atmosphere. Bring a picnic blanket and enjoy some live music from local artists – hopefully in the sunshine! We honestly cannot think of a better way to spend a weekend!
